A few Granex transplants were brought to Toombs County, Georgia by an onion farmer named Moses Coleman. One of the most notable is the Vidalia onion which is actually just a Texas Granex grown in Georgia soil. The Texas-bred Granex has become famous around the world by many different names. The Texas onion program crossed the Excel 986 with the Texas Early Grano 502 in 1952 which created the heavenly Granex onion. The USDA and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station introduced the Excel 986, which was selected from a single Yellow Bermuda plant. The Texas onion breeding program expanded significantly once they partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture in 1939. However, this large sweet early Grano 502 wasn’t famous all over the world until it met the Excel 986 onion. The Texas early Grano from field 502 were large, mild onions suited to grow in the southern most parts of the country which explains why it was so productive in Texas. This has been grown in Central America, Palestine, Australia and other parts of the warmer regions of the world.” -Ernest Mortenson, 1979 San Antonio Light Newspaper Granex & The Birth of the Vidalia Onion Officially, the name of the onion released by Texas A&M University in 1944 is Texas Early Grano. The original field number was 502 so the name Texas Grano 502 was first used and, in most cases, still is in use. Large bulbs were in demand in those days so the seed was soon multiplied by the commercial seedsmen. In addition, because of the large tops, the yield was much higher. Then we found that this selection was 10 days to two weeks earlier than the normal Bermuda types grown at that time. I had forgotten these Granos and wondered what had happened so I hastened to the office to inform Hawthorn. In the spring of 1940, I was making my customary tour of the farm and came upon this block of onions in the midst of the rest with all of the tops down indicating maturity at the same time. “These seeds were planted for the 1940 crop and there proved to be enough plants for one acre. ![]() They were then sent to Greeley, Colorado, for increasing the seed.” ![]() Temperatures were high that summer, so many of them rotted, more than half. This amounted to 4 or 5 bushels which were then stored in our station barn. He and his assistant, Oneal Blackard, spent one day harvesting all the bulbs that had matured in the whole field. Hawthorn, vegetable specialist at the Winter Garden Station, obtained permission from the Byrd Cattle Company to harvest all the early maturing bulbs on a certain date. He advised us that earliness in onions is a recessive character and will reproduce in successive generations. This is a market disadvantage which tended to offset the much higher yield. This variety required a longer day to form bulbs and was 10 to 14 days later than Bermuda. In 1938, the Byrd Cattle company at Winter Haven, Texas had 10 to 15 acres of the Grano. We tried this and when our grower neighbors saw the trial, they ordered all the seed available. Fabian Garcia, Director of the New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station, and he had obtained a high yielding variety from Spain from which he had selected a strain for New Mexico he named Grano (Babosa). Our main crop, onions, are not easy to cross since they have large flower heads, so we didn’t attempt much in onion breeding. “Horticulturists of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (Crystal City, Texas) used crossing techniques to improve tomatoes, cantaloupes, and strawberries. ![]() Jerry Parsons, a Texas Agricultural Extension Service Horticulturist interviewed Texas horticulture legend Ernest Mortenson (a man who was at the Winter Garden in Crystal City), for the San Antonio Light Newspaper in 1979 to document the truth: Thanks to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, we tracked down a firsthand account of the creation of the legendary Grano 502 sweet onion. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle, and it is a story best told by someone who was there. In 1933, Texas A&M’s Texas Agricultural experiment station started an onion breeding program at the Winter Garden outpost in Crystal City, Texas. The Mother Onion: “Texas Early Grano 502” Texas farmers needed a more reliable onion and in time they would get their wish. The island farmers could not produce the amount of seeds required due to the plummeting quality of the island seeds. Its hard to believe that the planting of one sleepy south Texas garden was the dawn of a global sweet onion revolution.īy 1920, the Bermuda Islands onion farms struggled to reach the new demand for their sweet tropical varieties. This island variety of onion was considerably milder than other onions at the time and consumers demanded more of this exotic onion. The sweet onion first came to south Texas from the Bermuda Islands, when a handful of Yellow Bermuda onion seeds were planted near Cotulla in 1898.

When it comes to ray tracing performance, I’m actually fairly impressed with the RTX 4060 Ti. If the idea of double digit frame rates repulses you, stepping things back to 1080p will hike things above 100fps, but don’t expect next-generation visuals if you choose to do so. At 1440p, the RTX 4060 Ti manages to pull off a respectable 67fps average, leaving the non-Ti behind in the sub-60fps dirt. It’s also just pretty demanding when played at higher resolutions, and highlights any GPU shortcomings effectively. I typically use Total War: Wahammer 3 as a native performance indicator, as the RTS romp lacks any sort of AI upscaling support. Perhaps there’s something funky going on under the hood of the PS5 port, but switching on DLSS 3 weirdly produces the difference I was expecting. I experienced even more shenanigans while testing Returnal, as for whatever reason, I was only able to boost fps by around two frames. I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that Lara’s adventure would benefit from a bit more VRAM headroom, but I can’t prove that for sure since I’ve not tested the 16GB model. ![]() Shadow of the Tomb Raider is another game that provided weirdly close benchmarks, as there’s only 10fps of a difference between the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 at 1080p. A pretty minor increase, but DLSS enhanced results place more distance between the two cards, which is likely linked to the increase in Tensor cores. That gap sadly isn’t consistent across all of our benchmarks, as Hitman squeezes 105fps at 1080p out of the RTX 4060 Ti compared to 100fps when paired with the non-Ti card. I guess I view these cards as being well suited to smaller ITX builds, and using less chonky cables sort of makes sense. I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT and XTX features a USB-C port, and it’s something I’d like to see in lower spec cards in the future. Round the back, you’ll find three DisplayPorts and one HDMI, just like with most other new-gen GPUs. Not that this card is remotely large compared to Nvidia’s monstrous high end trio, but I appreciate companies keeping entry-level and midrange cards on the dinky side. I’ll get onto thermals in a little bit, but the GPU maker has seemingly struck a good balance between card size cooling efficiency. Looks aside, the PNY RTX 4060 Ti is armed with a dual fan cooling system, and it feels more appropriate than triple fan alternatives. There are prettier versions out there, like a XLR8 Gaming Verto model that's clad with RGB, so the company is less copping out on the design front and more maintaining a subtle option for builders looking to keep things stealthy. ![]() The card wears a minimalist plastic shroud and metal backplate, brandished with bold white text on the top and sides. ![]() Normally I have lots of say when it comes to graphics card aesthetics, but PNY opts for an extremely subtle approach with its RTX 4060 Ti design. (Image credit: Future / Phil Hayton) Design Getting nitty gritty with pricing is essential when you’re building or maintaining an entry-level/mid-range gaming PC, and while the card’s performance holds up, it probably won’t revolutionize your experience. It could affect whether you invest in other vital parts for your build, like a new SSD or some more RAM to meet Starfield system requirements. To some, $399 might not sound like a lot for the RTX 4060 Ti, but that $100 difference is a big deal if you’re on a tight budget. ![]() However, the fact it costs $100 more than the vanilla GeForce RTX 4060 makes it incredibly hard to recommend to most players, as while it can boost fps further than its lower powered sibling, I’m not fully convinced it offers enough to justify the extra cost for everyone. In fact, I’ll confuse things by saying that this souped up variant is almost one of the best graphics cards out there for 1080p gaming. That might sound like I'm being a little unfair on the RTX 4060 Ti, but hear me out before you reach for your pitchforks. use: filtering images by their meta data the data added by the camera. As we’ve established above, boats tend to drag as they move through the water in the absence of hydrofoils. To explain how this is possible, we’ll go back to the dragging concept. That’s right, hydrofoils can help you manage the fuel consumption of your boat more efficiently. It supports better fuel efficiencyĪnother major advantage of installing a hydrofoil on your outboard motor is better energy conservation. In other words, if you mount a hydrofoil onto your small boat (for example, a fishing boat or leisure boat) outboard motor, you’ll detect an obvious improvement in its overall performance. The reason for this is that you can really notice the difference that installing a hydrofoil can make more on outboard motors compared to any other sort of watercraft, particularly if your boat is on the smaller side. Hydrofoils are quite effective when they’re paired with outboard motors on a boat. So what does this do? Well, it decreases the resistance of the boat against the water, resulting in your boat running with increased speed. Hydrofoils, however, act to reduce this dragging effect by slightly elevating the boat or watercraft above the surface of the water. This “drag” typically causes resistance (the water resists the movement of your boat), which results in slowing down your boat. You see, as you drive a boat in water, there’s a certain level of drag to be expected because of the weight of the structure. The first key benefit of hydrofoils is related to the reason they’re mounted onto boats in the first place. It improves overall boat performance and boosts its speed To help you make this decision, let’s talk about the advantages of installing a hydrofoil: 1. Now that you better understand what a hydrofoil does, you’re probably wondering if it’s something that your boat needs and is worth investing in. Pros of Using a Hydrofoil on Outboard Motor To be precise, there is some dragging, but it’s generated by air, not water, which is significantly lower. ![]() Now that the majority of the boat is in the air, the hull won’t produce nearly as much drag against the water. The hydrofoil works in a similar way where it generates lift that elevates most of the boat’s hull (sometimes the whole hull) as the vessel gains speed. This forms a region of lower pressure on top, and the difference in pressure between the top and bottom produces lift. The shape of an airfoil allows the air to flow more quickly above the surface than beneath it when moved through a medium. To explain how hydrofoils work, we need to take a look at airfoils. It’s called an airfoil when the medium is air and called a hydrofoil if the medium is water. What is a Hydrofoil and How does it Work?Ī foil is an object that causes elevation at a specific angle of attack upon moving through a medium. ![]() Today’s article is a guide on outboard hydrofoil pros and cons to help you decide whether or not it’s the right move for your boat.
